B. PRODUCTION, SUPPLY AND RESOURCE MOBILIZATION

1. Productions and Supply of Braille Text Books (Till December 2004)

NAWB is fully equipped with Braille printing press and produces text books for the blind student of grade I to X in Braille. Around 63,000 sets of Braille textbooks including Braille calendar, Braille magazine have been produced by NAWB. Braille books have been distributed to different schools and blind persons.

2. Educational Materials

NAWB also produces Mathematics teaching aids kits, white cane, and blind fold. In addition, NAWB has prepared Nemeth Braille Guide book, English Contraction Guide book to facilitate the resource teachers and rehabilitation personnel.

3. Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Training

Orientation & Mobility Training is very important aspects of the training for the BVI persons. Orientation training provides the blind person to recognize the scene where and in which position he or she is. Mobility training helps the BVI persons to walk independently and safely.

4. Seminar & Workshop

NAWB organizes seminar and workshop from time to time for resource teachers, rehabilitation personals and others to develop and update their knowledge and share their experiences for future improvements.

Personnel for each BVI person. Seed money (Interest free loan) is provided for income generation activities.

Under Cross Disability Service and Income Generation Programs of NAWB, CBR services are catered to persons with other disability identified in the project catchments area in collaboration and cooperation with other NGOs.

a. Key Components of CBR

  • Medical: Deals with prevention, cure and reversal of blindness.
  • Education: Deals with integrated special education.
  • Economic: Deals with vocational training for income generation.
  • Social: Deals with skills for social integration.
  • Community: Deals with community awareness, rehabilitation and all aspects of development.

b. Stepwise activities under CBR program

  • Survey: House to house survey to identify the BVI.
  • Prevention: Create community awareness on importance of Vitamin A, smokeless stove, kitchen garden for Vitamin A rich nutrients, distribution of Vitamin A etc.
  • Cure & Reversal: Primary Eye Care, arrangement and / or Referral system for the treatment of Cataract, Glaucoma, Trachoma and other eye diseases.
  • Early Intervention: Create awareness among the family members of Blind child to bring up their BVI children for early intervention.
  • Counseling, Orientation & Mobility: Develop self-confidence and skills for independent mobility.
  • Daily Living Skills: Develop independent skills for daily living viz. washing, cleaning, personnel hygiene, cooking etc.
  • Integrated Special Education: The school age BVI children are sent to nearby school for integrated special education.
